What's the Purpose of Life?
February 16, 2014

In the beginning our God created the heavens and the earth.  He created everything in it in 6 days. On that 6th day he made man from the earth, just as he’d made the plants and animals. The difference is, though, He declared that mankind would be made in His image. Mankind would be talking, reasoning, highly intelligent beings who would have dominion over everything else God made on earth; but most of all we would know and understand the purpose of life because we would be given the ability to walk with, and intimately know the Giver of Life. We would know God. This is the way life was and is meant to live. Man was never to be apart from God because then we would not have a clue about life -What was, what is, nor what is to come.

After the first humans on earth looked to the Adversary for answers about life, listened to and heeded his advice and pseudo wisdom, life changed harshly for them. Not only was that intimate relationship with our Maker severed because of their disobedience, the comfort and peace they were born to have had become a thing of the past…it was left in the Garden of Eden when they were kicked out.

Sadly, our God knew man would fall this way, and that he would always return to the dust from which he had been created, so the Only Wise God had prepared for this before the foundation of the earth was laid.

We already know Seth of Adam, who was born after Cain killed Abel and through whose lineage salvation would come to mankind. It was through this line that we know of many godly patriarchs …Enoch – who walked with God and was so close with the Father that He took him; Noah who was the only man alive before the temporary destruction of the earth by flood that was worthy to be spared...and then of course Abraham who has been declared a friend of God, becoming a father to anyone who now intimately knows and walks with God …whose seed (through Isaac & Jacob or Israel) became a Holy Nation who was personally given the laws, ways, and precepts of God, so chosen to be a light to the rest of the world.

Moreover, these are the people who knew, or were supposed to know and understand, the purpose of life just as we believers, the “seed of Abraham” through the Messiah, are today. These are the people, above anyone else, who were supposed to walk in the ways of God, never forgetting that life in this present time, was just for a moment….and in that moment they were to love the LORD with all of their hearts and not become like the Gentile nations, caught up in the world and the ways of it, just as we are to know this today.

They were to remember as Yeshua/Jesus came and taught - that they were in this world but, by the grace of God, not of it, because they were the children of the One True God who had the answers to life because of wisdom and understanding afforded by the Spirit of God.  These are the people who were to remember the LORD always and in everything. Isaiah 51:6 says:

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.”

As believers on the narrow, hard road, we are to know and remember that there will be a new heaven and a new earth because the one we reside on right now, and everything in it, will pass away. Can’t we see that? Can’t we see the decaying of the earth, just as the decaying of our bodies which is made from the contents of the earth- that is dust, clay/dirt?  We are seeing with our own eyes how the passing of this earth is only a matter of time, but of course, as bad as it is, it will only happen in the fullness of time, God’s time. Revelation 21:1 says:

“Then I saw a new heaven and new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had passed away, and the sea was no longer there.”

Mankind was created for the Creator’s Glory and His purpose. That is the privilege of being the Creator. Therefore, it behooves us to continually live with this in mind.  We must live life with the right perspective. That is remembering the LORD, reminding ourselves that life as we know it is a vapor. It is a “reality” only for a moment. Our lives have to be continually spent seeking the LORD…seeking, seeking, seeking, knocking and asking the Father to reveal Himself, His plans, His purposes, His will, and His everlasting realities to us… because this present age and time is so brief in comparison to  eternity - the “true reality” to come.

In Psalm 39:5-6 David put it like this:

“Make me grasp, LORD, what my end must be, what it means that my days are numbered; let me know what a transient creature I am. You have made my days like handbreadths; for you, the length of my life is like nothing.” Yes, everyone, no matter how firmly he stands is merely a puff of wind.”

So what's the purpose of life, our current reality?  Love the LORD, seek the LORD, know and obey the LORD...and love your neighbor as yourself... so you'll be ready - because as surely as we're alive right now, a new day is coming.

"I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth were completely gone and the sea was no longer there. Also a holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne say, See God's Shekinah is with mankind, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and He himself will be with them and be their God."
